Here are our new honeys for 2018, more to come...!
- Silver fir honey from black bees, Emmental Alps, Switzerland
- Jura blossom honey, Les Bois, Swiss Jura mountains
- Jura forest honey, Le Noirmont, Swiss Jura mountains
Beekeeping has a long tradition for the Walther family. The beautiful Swiss bee house in front of their huge farm house was built in the 1920s, and ever since then a family member has taken care of the small colonies of native black bees living there. The honeydew is collected from a nearby silver fir forest, but not every year, as it takes special climate conditions to allow a sufficient honeydew source for the bees to produce this dark brown, rich and intense forest honey.
This honey offers a broad range of multifloral flavors, from dandelion to blackberry blossoms, including many many others. The remote and unspoiled landscape of the Doubs Nature Park in the upper Jura is the nectar source for the bees who live at about 1000 m a.s.l. Intense yellow color, rich taste and sweetness.
The remote and unspoiled landscape of the Doubs Nature Park in the upper Jura is an invitation for long hikes. Flowery meadows spread among dark fir and spruce forests, and the river Doubs runs through this quiet and peaceful setting. We have chosen this special forest honey for its unique balance between honeydew and floral tastes, a smooth forest honey with a light brown color.
This is an unique alpine rose honey - as pure as it can get. Right now, a few days after the harvest, it's liquid with a light yellow color, absolutely clear. Once it is cristallized, as all natural honeys do over time, it has a bright white color like I've never seen with any other honey. The taste is pure alpine roses, like a greating from the heights of Alp Niemet where the bees collected their nectar. Organic and demeter. BioGourmet award! A true gourmet treat worth exploring for all honey lovers.
We've been so lucky to get a fair amount of Gion's famous Alpine Spring Honey. The harvest was only about 25% of the normal yield this year due to snow in April, but the quality is excellent. The honey has been stirred "just to the point of perfection" as Gion says and now is ready for all honey gourmets. It's a creamy, soft consistence with a strong, bright and fresh yellow color. The bees made it mostly from dandelion blossom nectar, and one can clearly see and taste this. Organic and demeter. BioGourmet award! Simply a unique honey.
Gion takes his bees to the meadows of Andeer to produce this typical and at the same
time nontypical alpine blossom honey. Typical are the flowers in the meadows and the nectar that the bees collect. Nontypical is what Gion makes out of this base. Just try and compare.
A golden, intense summer flowers honey with medium sweetness. Canton: Grisons.
This is the Swiss reference honey for the pure alpine rose variety. Travelling beekeeper Martin Dettli produces this honey at the remote heights of Andermatt close to the St. Gotthard pass. A typical pale, light yellow color with the mild clear sweetness of alpine roses. Organic. Demeter.
Very limited availability. Martin Dettli is an experienced and highly respected international bee expert. As a travelling beekeeper he finds the best places in
the Alps where he produces specialties like this heather honey, a rarity available on average only in one out of five years when circumstances fit perfectly. Canton Uri.
BonBeekeeper Andrea Bontognali works hard at high altitude for this unique honey. His rare black bees, a local breed known for their robustness, live in about
2000 meters height and collect alpine flower nectar even higher. Engadina, Canton Grisons.
Main source: alpine roses. Pure and mild with a broad sweet taste.
David Conradin inherited the love for bees from his father who started keeping bees in the 1950s. Now father and son work together to produce this wonderful
black bee honey within the UNESCO Biosphere reservation and the Swiss National Park. Main source: alpine roses. A golden honey with smooth, broad and sweet finishing. Organic. These bee hives are
located at a sunny terrace in an altitude of 1920m and the honey is produced exclusively! for our customers.
Our first harvest this year was the black bee honey from a remote and beautiful natural reserve, the Diemtigtal. It's located in the Bernese Oberland. Beekeeper Christoph Wissler is dedicated to the native black bees and puts all of his efforts into the conservation and care of this special species. The yield of black bee honey is lower than other bee species, but they are able to fly higher and collect nectar even at low temperatures from a wider range of flowers and trees. In the pictures you can see the wooden home for the bees which was built by hand by Christoph's father, as well as the group of local beekeepers taking care of black bees (Christoph is on the left). There is also a picture of the Diemtigtal landscape where our honey is made.
A sweet and mild honey, made of nectar from flowery alpine meadows, wild raspberries, maple and silver fir honey dew.
The bee colonies of Matteo Dell’Andrino are located in the Southern Alps where the chestnut tree line meets the flowery alpine meadows. This specific mixture of vegetation is a feast for the bees and honey lovers alike. Canton Ticino.
Main source :
chestnut and lime trees, alpine flowers. A typical chestnut flavor balanced with mild lime and a mix of alpine flowers. Organic.
Thanks to Milo Zanecchia for the beautiful photos from Val Colla!
Beekeeper Stefan Manser lives at the very end of a valley in Glarus surrounded by impressive and high mountains. The Swiss Canton Glarus has strict regulations to protect the native black bees, apis mellifera mellifera, since the 1970's. Stefan uses his spring honey to produce this very soft and creamy, though tasty honey. Main source: flowery alpine meadows. Remains creamy with a broad sweet taste.
The honey of Claudio Gianotti has been awarded the gold medal at the OLMA St. Gallen expo for it's unique quality and taste. Claudio is a beekeeper since decades and surely knows the best places at his home village Promontogno in Bergell to produce a wonderfull, very smooth lime, chestnut and alpine flower honey with a great balance of fresh citric and sweet tastes. A truly special delight. Canton Grisons.
Harvested in mid July 2017. Tschierv is a small village at an altitude of 1660 meter, located at the heart of the Biosfera region Val Müstair. Beekeeper Renata Bott has about 20 beehives in this breathtakingly beautiful and remote region of the Swiss National Park where a bear visits her hives every now and then to taste some of this great honey. This year, Renata was quicker and provided us with supply for the honey lovers all over the world. Her black bees collect the nectar from the flowery meadows between 1700 and 2000 meters altitude, with wild thyme, sage and dozens of other wild flowers. Intense sweetness. Exact beehive location: Mottas above Tschierv, Val Müstair.
This organic, rich and flavorsome alpine summer honey is harvested from beehives at about 1000 m a.s.l. After the harvest, Mareika carefully takes her time to stir the honey during a couple of weeks - right to the point where it remains creamy for a very long time.
Val Poschiavo is a remote and very green, natural valley in the South of Switzerland. There are mighty mountains like the Piz Palü with an altitude of 3900 m, and also villages like Campocologno at a low altitude of 550 m (i.e. low for Switzerland...). The valley stretches from the Berninapass to the Italian border and has tree different climate zones - a true discovery for everyone interested in nature and culture! Diego Lardelli produces a powerful summer blossom honey, with influence of buckwheat blossoms (as shown in the images), and flavors that include alpine roses from higher altitudes.
A smooth caramel taste from the alpine forests at 1500 m a.s.l. adds to the rich flower blossom spectrum and makes this honey a unique treat. Due to the dry climate the honey harvest is especially low in the alpine regions of Valais, and we are very happy that we can offer you this rarity. Images will follow soon.
